Finasteride is a medicine that works by blocking the enzyme called 5-alpha reductase. It's also known as Proscar and Propecia. Merck manufactures both of these products. The two Finasteride products work the same way, but they were made for different reasons. Proscar was first sold in 1992 to treat enlarged prostates. In 1997, a drug called Finasteride was released under the name Propecia to treat male pattern hair loss. Proscar is much stronger and contains nearly five times as much Finasteride than Propecia.
Finasteride has found a home among some anabolic steroid users in an effort to fight androgenic side effects. Androgenic side effects can occur with many anabolic steroids, but they aren’t strong enough to warrant concern. Also, androgenic side effects are very dependent on genetics. Some men won't get androgenic side effects even with high doses of steroids that are strong androgenic. Genetics matter when it comes to androgenic effects and the body's response to and metabolism of the androgen dihydrotestosterone (DHT)
Characteristics:
Finasteride is considered to be a Type II 5-alpha reductase inhibitor. The human body has two types of reductase enzymes, Type I and Type II. Type II is responsible for about 2/3 of all the circulating dihydrotestosterone in the body. The Type II enzyme is found in the scalp, prostate and skin. Finasteride is a Type II 5-alpha reductase inhibitor that blocks the 5-alpha reductase enzyme’s ability to metabolize specific hormones. Finasteride works by blocking a hormone called DHT.
Effects:
Finasteride is designed to stop testosterone from being reduced to dihydrotestosterone by the 5-alpha reductase enzyme. When we inhibit DHT, this can prevent hair loss. DHT can damage hair follicles, but if Finasteride is used, it can fix the problem or even stop it. DHT can also lead to prostate enlargement, which is a bigger problem than hair loss. Finasteride has a strong effect on the prostate. Studies have shown that taking Finasteride for 6 months can significantly reduce prostate enlargement.
When looking at the effects of Finasteride, we must look at them a little differently when considering its use with anabolic steroids. Many anabolic steroids are made from DHT, like Oxymetholone (Anadrol), Methenolone (Primobolan), and Stanozolol (Winstrol) There is nothing for the 5-alpha reductase enzyme to metabolize, so there is nothing for a related inhibitor like Finasteride to block. We have steroids made from testosterone, and Finasteride can help people who use these steroids. But this will only apply to testosterone-derived anabolic steroids, such as Testosterone (all forms), Methyltestosterone (Metandren) and Fluoxymesterone (Halotestin)
When there is a lot of testosterone in the body, the 5-alpha reductase enzyme needs more of it to break down. This can lead to more DHT buildup. Finasteride can prevent androgenic effects. This can help prevent hair loss and make the prostate bigger, but it's only helpful for people who are more likely to have male pattern baldness. If you don't have hair loss genes, it's impossible. If you are genetically predisposed, you’re going to lose your hair at some point, but high levels of DHT may speed up the process. Finasteride can also help with acne that sometimes occurs because of a strong androgenic atmosphere. However, we’re only talking about those who are genetically sensitive. If you are not usually sensitive to acne, it is unlikely that any acne will occur at all.
Finasteride can help reduce the relative androgenicity of Testosterone, Methyltestosterone, and Fluoxymesterone. Finasteride will not completely eliminate the hormone’s androgenicity, but it will have a significant effect. If you have a problem with androgenic effects, you might want to avoid taking strong androgenic steroids. If you want to supplement with anabolic steroids, you'll still need exogenous testosterone, but you'll want to keep it low. For those people, steroids like Anavar, Equipoise, and Deca Durabolin are good because they don't cause androgenic side effects.
Finasteride can also make certain steroids, such as Nandrolone and any Nandrolone derivative, like Trenbolone, more androgenic. When using such steroids, you should avoid Finasteride and all 5-alpha reductase inhibitors. Finasteride will not affect DHT-derived anabolic steroids. Again, there is nothing for the enzyme to metabolize, so there is nothing to stop it. If specific DHT steroids are a problem for you because of their androgenic effects, or steroids like Trenbolone, which is highly androgenic, you may want to avoid them.
Side effects:
Most men tolerate finasteride well, but it can cause moderate to severe androgen imbalances. Finasteride will usually cause problems with sexual performance. 6% of people who take the inhibitor will lose their libido and 8% may become impotent. Some men may have trouble breathing and not get enough air, but Finasteride doesn't usually cause these side effects. Some men have reported gynecomastia symptoms and, in rare cases, rashes.
The most serious side effects of Finasteride are those that affect women and pregnant people. Women who are pregnant or may become pregnant should avoid this compound at all costs. Men who take Finasteride should make sure their female counterparts don't touch the compound. Finasteride can be absorbed through the skin and can damage a male fetus. Data has also shown that Finasteride may be present in semen. We don't know how much it absorbs, but we do know that some is passed during sex. Men who use Finasteride will need to use condoms or avoid all sexual activity with women who may get pregnant. This rule may hurt the unborn child.
Dose:
Finasteride doses will be 1mg per day, with 5mg per day for prostate enlargement. To stop androgenic side effects of certain steroids, you should take 1mg of Finasteride every day.
While Finasteride can be helpful when used with anabolic steroids, keep in mind that it only works with the steroids discussed above. Further, the use of Finasteride along with Testosterone, Methyltestosterone or Fluoxymesterone can make these steroids less effective. This will lead the individual to only use the inhibitor when absolutely necessary. If not, there is no point in using anabolic steroids. Finasteride won't affect DHT compounds and can make Nandrolone and Trenbolone more androgenic, but it won't make Boldenone (Equipoise) or Methandrostenolone (Dianabol) less androgenic.
